Frequently Asked Questions – PAT Testing

What is Portable Appliance Testing?
Portable appliance testing (PAT) is the term used to describe the examination of electrical appliances and equipment to ensure they are safe to use. Most electrical safety defects can be found by visual examination but some types of defect can only be found by testing. However, it is essential to understand that visual examination is an essential part of the process because some types of electrical safety defect can’t be detected by testing alone.
How often do you have to PAT Test?

Although there are no requirements for PAT testing frequency, there are recommendations. As all premises and appliances have different requirements, please contact us and we will be able to advise you on your specific requirements.

What needs to be PAT tested?
In other words, if you have an appliance that has a plug that is intended to be connected to a wall socket or generator, it qualifies as needing to be PAT tested. This can include items such as electric drills, monitors, printers, PCs, kettles and larger items like photocopiers, vending machines and others.
Who is qualified to carry out PAT testing?

The law states that in order to PAT test the individual must be a competent person. The definition of a competent person as per page 13 of the IEE Code of Practice 4th Edition states that the person must: Have adequate knowledge of electricity. Have adequate experience of electrical work.

Does PAT Testing affect our insurance cover?
When Insurance companies give cover to a business, they assume the owners of that business are complying with all regulations. An insurance company may reduce, delay or even refuse to pay on a claim for damage if an appliance that has not been tested has caused the damage.
How much will my PAT testing cost?
This will depend on how many items need testing. Contact us for an accurate pricing. If what you are looking for isn’t on our site, then please do give us a call so we can help. If you have a quote from another company give us a call and we may be able to beat it!
Will the testing be disruptive?
During Portable Appliance Testing we try to minimise any disruption by only disconnecting items as we test them. There are times we may be able to work outside of business hours if this helps.
